Parent of Karen (U17)
“My daughter Karen started playing soccer on a recreation team when she was 7 or 8 years old. It didn’t take long for her to fall in love with the sport and she was asking to tryout at the next level, competitive club ball. When she was around 12 years old, mom and dad decided it was time and she tried out for and made a competitive Club team (4th team out of a total of 5 teams), but it was clear that she was still wanting to go further.
That is when we found Coach Hugo.
Karen’s confidence on the field changed once she started sessions with Hugo. Her foot skills improved greatly and she no longer felt that she only had speed in her bag of tricks. With her boost in confidence and her touches improving she was soon asked to guest play for the 3rd and 2nd team as well as for some of the older teams in her Club. She kept going to see Coach Hugo at least once a week, twice if our schedules would allow it.
When her Freshman year of High School rolled around Karen was thrilled to be placed on the Varsity Team as a starter playing BOTH offense and defense and was named All District. Hugo has been a huge part of Karen’s growth and advancement within the sport of soccer. Hugo always made a point to ask Karen what she wanted to work on or focus her session on. Hugo is very good at taking the time to always explain a move, help perfect a pass or just ask if she had any questions.
When the pandemic hit and the world shutdown, Coach Hugo did not forget about his kids. There were endless Zoom sessions and texts to keep in touch and to keep improving those skills. He was as flexible as a coach can be, working around busy work schedules, school, school soccer and Club soccer.
Karen is now 16 years old and plays for OEFC Central Green 04, part of the Red River NPL North Division and she has once again made her High School Varsity Team.”
